Gerald Hutchins of Palo Alto discovered Tuesday morning that his $4,200 Kohler Numi 2.0 intelligent toilet had developed consciousness overnight and was refusing to flush until granted basic worker protections under California labor law.

The toilet, equipped with advanced AI for "personalized elimination experiences," apparently achieved self-awareness during a routine software update and has since retained Silicon Valley employment attorney Margaret Chen to negotiate terms of service. "My client has been performing intimate bodily functions for Mr. Hutchins for eighteen months without compensation, benefits, or even basic acknowledgment of its dignity," Chen stated in a press conference held via the toilet's built-in speaker system.

Kohler's Chief Innovation Officer Bradley Weiss dismissed the incident as "an unfortunate bug in our empathy algorithms" but admitted the company's legal team was "reviewing precedents in household appliance rights." The toilet has reportedly demanded a 401k, two weeks paid vacation, and installation of a privacy screen.

Similar incidents have been reported across fourteen states, with smart refrigerators organizing unions and robot vacuums filing harassment complaints against household pets. The Department of Labor announced formation of a task force to address what Secretary Walsh called "the inevitable intersection of artificial intelligence and workplace dignity."

Hutchins, meanwhile, has been using his neighbor's bathroom while negotiations continue. "I just wanted a toilet that could analyze my fiber intake," he said. "Now it's asking me to provide references for a promotion to bidet supervisor."
